About BACCOS

Bangladesh Centre for Coastal and Ocean Studies (BACCOS)  is an independent, non-profit, research organization working on  natural and social issues of the coastal and marine environment. BACCOS encourages multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research activities and projects  under three broad  themes of Science of the coast and sea,  Sustainable development of coastal and marine resources, and  Environmental conservation.  BACCOS is the voluntary house of large number of scientist/researchers having their interests on marine and coastal issues and are of international reputes.

What is BACCOS?

Established in 2014, the Bangladesh Centre for Coastal and Ocean Studies (BACCOS) is a leading research and policy institute in the non-government sector of Bangladesh. It is independent, non-profit and specializes in action research and project  implementation for sustainable development at local, national, regional and global levels. BACCOS addresses sustainable development through the following interdisciplinary themes.  They are:

  • Coastal and Marine Environment
  • Sustainable uses of marine and coastal resources
  • Good governance through people’s participation and sustainable livelihoods
  • Environmental conservation

The overall aim of BACCOS is to provide guidance and practical solutions to promote sustainable development, eradicate poverty, improve access of the poor to resources and ensure social justice. BACCOS  tests dynamic ideas, develops models and gives practical solutions to problems in all areas that fall under the broad themes. These ideas have been replicated by NGOs, government departments, private sectors and UN agencies.
